Huntly Festival of Illustration

www.illustrationhuntly.com

The Festival of Illustration in Huntly, Aberdeenshire took place over two weeks in August and September 2024. This was the culmination of more than a year’s work for myself and a small team of other volunteers, and was generously funded by a number of local and national funders. A full report about the festival can be downloaded here or on the festival website (above) where there are details of some of the festival books that are still available from Orb’s Community Bookshop in Huntly.

The festival included two exhibitions held at a new local venue in the town square, No 30.

One was focussed on the life and writing of local man George MacDonald and showcased 48 of the international illustrators who have brought his children’s books to life over the last two centuries.

The other exhibition displayed the work of illustrators working in Scotland today.

There were talks and workshops by leading illustrators, and all the local primary and secondary schools brought groups of children to the events or took part in other ways.

The event was a huge success as can be seen in the festival report, and was the first time that many people had considered illustration as an artform in its own right.
